Alchemists are knowledgeable and naturally talented individuals who can manipulate and modify matter due to their art. Yet despite the wide range of possibilities, alchemy is not as all-powerful as most would believe. Human transmutation is strictly forbidden, and whoever attempts it risks severe consequences. Even so, siblings Edward and Alphonse Elric decide to ignore this great taboo and bring their mother back to life. Unfortunately, not only do they fail in resurrecting her, they also pay an extremely high price for their arrogance: Edward loses his left leg and Alphonse his entire body. Furthermore, Edward also gives up his right arm in order to seal his brother's soul into a suit of armor.

The mangaka puts a lot of effort into shade and light in Berserk. By that we get a very distinctive nights, sunshines and sunsets as well as dynamic shadows (however awkward it sounds) that no anime director can mime. It's simply sensational to look at all that and even be able to read the story of it... It is clear to me, that Miura-sensei is trying to end up with a sort of masterpiece in terms of manga. And you know what? He's pretty close to achieving this.

There are, however, some bad points too. The manga is not for everyone. I would strictly add parental advisory and 18+ to it. Nowhere else will you see so much nudity, sex and violence as in this manga. It's not a hentai-like nudity and sex though. Berserk shows a violent world with all its aspects, hence these parts were as relevant as any other to make the story as believable as possible.

何度でも、一生読める漫画。
ふとした時に、自然に手に取って一話読んでしまう。
「生きること」そのものが漫画という形になっていて、根源的な本能にすっと寄り添ってくれる感じ。
文字でこの感覚は伝えられない。

最近になり、全１７巻の新装版セットで購入。

実は手塚治虫先生の作品は読みにくかったり、ギャグのセンスも好きじゃなかったり、
何より過去にこの作品や火の鳥に触れて、「気持ち悪い表現の多い作家だなぁ」という、一種のトラウマに近い不快感を覚えてしまいました。

実はその印象は拭えてなくて、この作品でも下記エピソードは異常というか、倫理的にも表現的にも気持ち悪いものがあります。
１巻　「人間鳥」。これは狂気を感じる異常作。
３巻　「化身」。異常作。

また、ブラックジャックが医者の良心という語られ方も納得がいかない。
中には「それ、人としてどうなの」という行動や判断をしている箇所が多数あります。
それらも結果的に良い結末、解釈になったというだけのものがある。
要するに結構ブレてるんですよね。

ただ、これだけののレビューがありながら、私の上記の様な意見はほとんど無いので、多分私がひねくれてるだけです。。。

ただ、一話完結スタイルでは高クオリティなのは素晴らしいと思います。
下記エピソードは本当に秀逸で、短いページ数でここまで素晴らしいドラマが生めるのかといった感動もあります。

１巻　「海賊の腕」　傑作です。
５巻　「なんという舌」
６巻　「おばあちゃん」　等

火の鳥と並んで天才手塚治虫の集大成とも言える作品です。
人間として生まれてくるべきでなかったかもしれないほどのコンプレックスを持った
主人公ブラックジャックとそれ以上の悲しい運命を以降も背負うピノコの二人が
医療を舞台にヒーローでありヒロインになる痛快さが根源にある。
医療に救われる命や運命が、ブラックジャックが求める法外な治療費以上の価値があることに気づく。
なんということだろう、４０年以上前に漫画という世界でこれを伝えようとした手塚がいた。
